RAF Witchford & RAF Mepal Museum

Chocks away for RAF Museum design

The RAF Witchford and RAF Mepal Museum was created to preserve and share the history of two important Second World War bomber stations and the people whose lives were shaped by them during the defence of Britain and the Allied war effort. Following the closure of the original RAF Witchford Exhibition, established by local historian Barry Aldridge after decades of research and documentation, Grovemere Property commissioned a new, purpose-built museum in 2024. The free museum brings together artefacts, photographs, personal accounts and historical displays to tell the stories of the airmen, ground crews and local communities connected to RAF Witchford and RAF Mepal.

We were commissioned by Tricolor Associates, heritage and culture specialists, to develop the museum’s branding and design. Working closely with the Tricolor team, we created a cohesive visual identity and a comprehensive range of graphics that help bring the history of the two airfields and the stories behind them to life. The museum itself, designed by Gary Johns Architects, takes inspiration from the fuselage of the iconic Avro Lancaster bomber. Its distinctive form creates a striking landmark while establishing a strong visual connection between the building and the history presented within it.

From the overall branding through to the individual exhibition graphics, our designs were developed to complement the museum’s storytelling, helping visitors connect with the people, places and events behind the history. We’re incredibly proud to have contributed to such a meaningful project and to have played a part in helping preserve and share the stories of RAF Witchford and RAF Mepal for future generations.
